Nearly 9,000 units and 800,000 workers, who are employed directly and indirectly, are on strike after the Rs 50,000-crore knitwear industry in Tamil Nadu s Tirupur on Monday decided to protest againt the spike in yarn prices. According to industry sources, the production loss is estimated to be around Rs 165 crore due to the strike. As many as 27 knitwear stakeholders associations and 8 trade unions have called for the strike, which will involve about 9,000 worker units, catering to both domestic and export markets. These units employ around 800,000 workers directly or indirectly. The turmoil in garment manufacturing the lynchpin of Tirupur s economy has had a cascading effect on the entire value chain in the region, said Raja Shanmugham, president of Tirupur Exporters Association.

Tirupur industrialists to train 7,000 workers

The Tirupur Exporters and Manufacturers’ Association (TEAMA) has put in place an action plan to train a workforce of 7,000 for the 36 factories to come up in the proposed textile park at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district.
More skill training centres have been planned to be started to create a huge workforce before the Veda Textile Park at Ayyakaranpulam takes shape. The park, comprising 34 readymade garment and two knitwear units, is to be constructed at ₹ 96.86 crore. The Centre will offer a subsidy of ₹37.8 crore and the State government ₹23.62 crore.
The Union Textiles Ministry is expected to accord its formal sanction of its share of the total project cost during this week.
Coimbatore: Handlooms and textiles minister O S Manian met readymade garment makers and exporters in Tirupur on Wednesday and invited them to invest in the new Veda Textile Park, promising immediate fulfilment of all basic requirements. The meeting was held at the Tirupur collectorate to discuss the status of the upcoming park and requirements. Pointing out that two locations were earlier shortlisted for the park in Nagapattinam, the minister said they had zeroed in on 46.5 hectares land at Ayakkaranpulam in Vedaranyam block for the project.
The textile park would have 36 units - 34 readymade garment units and two knitwear units. “The park will be set up at a cost of Rs98.86 crore, of which the Union government offer Rs 37.8 crore subsidy and the state Rs 23.62 crore subsidy,” the minister said. Manian said they had requested the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation to train 4,000 employees at the park in stitching and other allied garment related activities.
