DVIDS - News - Berklee music student turned Army officer supports Horn of Africa mission

1 CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti – Boston’s Berklee College of Music is one of the world’s preeminent music study institutes. Many graduates go on to become industry professionals while others become mega music stars. But only one graduate of Berklee now serves with the U.S. Army in the Horn of Africa. Army Capt. Kai Callwood, who holds a degree in music production and engineering and another in music business management, is a Logistics Civil Augmentation Program professional assigned to the 405th Army Field Support Brigade’s Army Field Support Battalion-Africa. Currently deployed to Djibouti and Somalia, the classical and jazz tuba and trombone musician now spends most of his days as a 405th AFSB LOGCAP professional assisting with various contractual and logistical requirements. He also serves as a petroleum and water operations planner and volunteer mortuary affairs officer.

8 CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait Army Reserve Maj. Eric Hughes, deployed here and serving as the 1st Theater Sustainment Command s operational command post family life chaplain, was reluctant to follow his vocation. Chaplains can specialize in various areas, one is being an instructor, another is hospital ministry work, and the third is mental health and the family life chaplaincy, said Hughes, who deployed with the Indianapolis-based 310th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) whose Soldiers staff the 1st TSC-OCP. To become a family life chaplain, an Army chaplain must earn a master s degree in counseling or social work or in family therapy, he said. Although it is not required by the Army, Hughes secured his counseling license and works as a counselor for the Veteran Center in Pontiac, Michigan.

57 TIRANA, Albania– U.S. Army Major Gen, Christopher Mohan, commander of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, visited troops on the beach, as they performed bulk fuel transfer over-the-shore May 4, 2021, as part of Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore operations currently taking place here as part of DEFENDER-Europe 21 exercises in Durres, Albania. “The role of the 21st TSC is to set the conditions for the success of this exercise,” explained Mohan. “Currently we have soldiers. teams, deployed from Estonia all the way down to Greece. The central point of our operation is here at Durres in Albania.” JLOTS is about the ability to go into multiple different types of ports in order to get fuel, equipment and supplies to troops in the field quickly, during the DEFENDER- Europe 21 exercises or any potential crisis.
