MUNCIE, Ind. Worldwide, one in five women will experience a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, such as postpartum depression. From the roughly 700 babies born in Delaware County annually, about 140 parents will develop a disorder, and many don t know where to turn for help.
The Muncie Maternal Mental Health Coalition is trying to change that, and will be bringing the issue to light during the Climb Out of the Darkness event on May 1.
While perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) are a common problem, Corie Hess, founder of the coalition, said women and families often try to avoid that conversation due to fear and stigma surrounding mental health.
