Firefighters refused to help remove protesters who had occupied a factory belonging to an Israeli-based firm.

His was a black coffee, hers was a latte. He wore his black face mask, she wore her white surgical one. Yet when Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner met up for a cuppa in Portcullis House, they shared a smile and a laugh. The message to onlookers felt deliberate: we might look and sound different, but we really are on the same team.
If there was a sense of uneasy relief, it was understandable. Residents have said they did not hear an emergency alarm as a blaze tore through their east London block bearing the same cladding that was used on Grenfell Tower.
London Fire Brigade said two adults had been taken to hospital after suffering the effects of smoke inhalation and a further 38 adults and four children were treated at the scene after the fire ripped through the 19-storey New Providence Wharf development, near Canary Wharf, on Friday morning.
After a field fire I attended, one of the older members of the crew came to me to say how I impressed them with how hard I had worked and the skills I’d demonstrated. It was a good feeling to know that what I’d learnt at training school had paid off.”
At the time of Nicola joining, there were no female station facilities or uniform at the fire service.
Her first payslip even gave her role as firewoman. This, however, didn’t deter Nicola from pursuing a career as a firefighter.
She added: “While I was studying, I would often see the Wisbech crew practicing their skills in the station drill yard from the window of the isle college library.
