Food Bank recognizes volunteer and Vietnam War veteran Billy Johnson s service The Food Bank of Central Louisiana The following article was released by the Food Bank of Central Louisiana on Monday, May 3rd:  Billy Johnson is a retiree who volunteers in the food pantry at Helping Hands Storefront Ministries in Leesville. When we went to Helping Hands to talk about the pantry’s partnership with Walmart, we had no idea that Billy would bring the story full circle. Like several food pantries across Central Louisiana, this ministry receives food donated through Walmart’s Retail Recovery Program. “Walmart’s been good to us, it really has.” And he should know.

Girls Empowerment Network launches new advocacy program, embraces pandemic lessons

Returning to camp Last summer, Spark Kits and the virtual program became GEN s summer camp. This year, Spark Kits virtual groups will continue, but two in-person camps for third- through eighth-graders will be offered. Own Your Power; Find Your Voice is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 12-16 and Use Your Power: Be an Awesome Advocate is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 26-30. Both are at First Baptist Church of Austin downtown.  They won t be the large camps of years past and will have health checks, mask-wearing, social distancing and hand-washing. We see this as an option, Cuba Lewis says. We want there an option to be there for our girls and our team, too. People can t face another summer from home.  

Fight Hunger Spark Change

Second Harvest Spokesperson Blake Haynes says “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” is a nationwide campaign. “It is a partnership between Feeding America, Walmart, the Walmart Foundation, and Sam’s Club,” Haynes tells St. Joseph Post. Haynes says there a few ways you can give to this initiative including purchasing specific items from suppliers at the store. “There’s 27 different suppliers so it’s suppliers like Kellogs and General Mills, Coke, Monster, Great Value, some of those other ones, Live Well Be Strong,” says Haynes. Haynes says you can also participate in the campaign through donations. “You can also donate online on the app and/or in-store at like Kiosks or check out stations,” says Haynes. “You’ll be prompted to there on your screen either roll up your dollar amount to make a donation or then donate a certain amount like $5, $10, things like that.”
