Post-holiday COVID-19 uptick in deaths; cases on S.I. persist into 2021

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The coronavirus (COVID-19) has claimed the lives of 18 more Staten Islanders since Wednesday, while an average of 467 residents have tested positive each of the past three days, according to data collected by the New York City Department of Health.
Those numbers reflect a notable uptick, compared to the week of Christmas. Health experts across the U.S. had predicted a surge in cases due to holiday gatherings.
DEATHS
City health officials on Wednesday reported a daily total of 10 coronavirus deaths after a total of 23 deaths were reported over the course of six days prior to that.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. State health officials have noted a post-holiday spike in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, which appears to include Staten Island, where positive cases reported by the city have increased by 447 from Monday to Tuesday.
The increase is dramatic in a month that has seen surging cases on the borough, and hospitalization numbers for COVID-19 that had not been seen since spring.
As of Tuesday, 29,772 positive tests have been recorded across the borough since March, reflecting the 447 new cases.
From Sunday to Monday, 224 new cases were reported.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Since mid-week, another 15 Staten Islanders reportedly died of coronavirus (COVID-19) complications, the latest city Health Department data shows.
In total, health officials say 1,253 confirmed and probable fatalities on Staten Island had been recorded since the start of the pandemic.
All of the deaths reported since Wednesday fall in the “confirmed” category, while the number of “probable” deaths remains at 195, data shows.
A death is classified as “probable” if the decedent was a city resident who had no known positive laboratory test for the coronavirus, but the death certificate lists “COVID-19” or an equivalent as a cause of death.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. More than 100 Staten Islanders have died this month from coronavirus (COVID-19) complications, the latest city Health Department data shows.
Another eight deaths reported Wednesday afternoon increased the borough’s overall suspected COVID-19 death toll to 1,238 including 107 in December.
At the same time, 324 new confirmed coronavirus cases were reported on Staten Island in the past 24 hours, according to the most recent data available.
An additional 243 were recorded from Monday to Tuesday.
The fatalities include 1,043 Staten Islanders with confirmed COVID-19 cases, up six from Tuesday.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Three more Staten Islanders have succumbed to the coronavirus, increasing the borough’s suspected COVID-19 death total for December to 99, city Health Department data shows.
At the same time, 243 new confirmed coronavirus cases were reported on Staten Island in the past 24 hours, according to the most recent data available.
Meanwhile, coronavirus hospitalizations here, which have fluctuated over the past 10 days to two weeks, dipped by seven, one day after rising by nine.
