Queensland and Victoria have introduced tough new restrictions for Sydneysiders less than a week before Christmas.
Anyone who has visited the Greater Sydney region and is planning to cross the border for the holiday break will now have to apply for a permit, get tested on arrival and self isolate until they are given the all-clear.
The strict new measures come after the Northern Beaches outbreak climbed by 23 cases on Saturday, including 10 from yesterday - and as traces of coronavirus were detected in sewage samples on the Gold Coast, Cleveland, Townsville and North Cairns.
Testing revealed 21 cases of those cases are directly linked to the Avalon cluster, while two still remain under investigation. Infections linked to the worrying outbreak have now reached 41.

Hundreds of gym-goers on Sydney’s northern beaches have been asked to get tested and isolate immediately, as NSW Health races to contain a cluster numbering 28 cases.
Authorities issued a public health alert on Saturday morning, calling several hundred people who attended an Avalon gym to take urgent action.
A known case attended Anytime Fitness on Avalon Parade on Dec. 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12 while infectious,
Investigations are underway and authorities are in the process of tracking down close contacts but are asking anyone who attended the gym on those days to get tested immediately and isolate until further advice.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has reported 23 new cases of coronavirus in the state and will impose a lockdown for the Northern Beaches area from 5pm (local time) today.
Twenty-one of the new cases are linked to the Northern beaches cluster and two remain under investigation.
