Belagavi, Feb 1 (IANS): Slamming Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey for raking up the inter-state border row, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol on Sunday claimed that the Maratha king Chhatrapti Shivaji was a Kannadiga . Thackrey does not know history. Shivaji s forefather Belliyappa was a Kannadiga from Soratur in Karnataka s Gadag district. When drought struck Gadag, he (Belliyappa) migrated to Maharashtra, and Shivaji was the fourth generation of his family, Karjol told reporters in Karnataka s Belagavi.
At a book launch on the border dispute between the two states in Mumbai on January 27, Thackeray said areas dominated by Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka like Belagavi, Karwar and Nippani should be declared as the Union Territory till the Supreme Court gave its final verdict in the decades old case.

“Thackrey does not know history. Shivaji’s forefather Belliyappa was a Kannadiga from Soratur in Karnataka’s Gadag district. When drought struck Gadag, he (Belliyappa) migrated to Maharashtra, and Shivaji was the fourth generation of his family,” Karjol told reporters in Karnataka’s Belagavi.

BELAGAVI: To counter the Uddhav Thackeray government which has raked up the boundary dispute by demanding the merger of several areas of Karnataka with Maharashtra, Kannada organisations and leaders have appealed to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to immediately name a minister for the boundary dispute besides filing a case of contempt of court in the Supreme Court against Maharashtra.
He tells Uddhav Thackarey to stop raking up border issue for political gains
Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi said on Thursday that the border issue was settled and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackarey must behave maturely and stop unnecessarily raking up the issue for political gains.
Hitting back at Mr. Thackarey’s statement that Belagavi and other areas of the State claimed by Maharashtra must be declared Union Territories, Mr. Savadi said by the same logic Karnataka would also have a claim over several areas in Maharashtra, including Mumbai. “The entire Bombay Karnataka region was under Bombay Presidency and hence we can also argue that we have a claim over Mumbai. We can make a claim on Mumbai and say till the issue is settled, let Mumbai be made a Union Territory,” he said.

mocked Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over Belgaum dispute requesting the Central government to declare Mumbai as a Union Territory. Mumbai should be included in Karnataka. Until that is done, I request Central government to declare Mumbai as a Union Territory, news agency ANI quoted Karnataka Deputy CM as saying.
His remarks came after Uddhav Thackeray accused the Karnataka government of deliberately changed name of the disputed region of Belgaum in the state. He said the Maharashtra government will approach the Supreme Court to the region as Union Territory till the matter is in court.
