Thackrey does not know history. Shivaji s forefather Belliyappa was a Kannadiga from Soratur in Karnataka s Gadag district. When drought struck Gadag, he (Belliyappa) migrated to Maharashtra, and Shivaji was the fourth generation of his family, Karjol told reporters in Karnataka s Belagavi. At a book launch on the border dispute between the two states in Mumbai on January 27, Thackeray said areas dominated by Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka like Belagavi, Karwar and Nippani should be declared as the Union Territory till the Supreme Court gave its final verdict in the decades old case.

Hitting back at Mr. Thackarey’s statement that Belagavi and other areas of the State claimed by Maharashtra must be declared Union Territories, Mr. Savadi said by the same logic Karnataka would also have a claim over several areas in Maharashtra, including Mumbai. “The entire Bombay Karnataka region was under Bombay Presidency and hence we can also argue that we have a claim over Mumbai. We can make a claim on Mumbai and say till the issue is settled, let Mumbai be made a Union Territory,” he said.

Mumbai should be included in Karnataka. Until that is done, I request Central government to declare Mumbai as a Union Territory, news agency ANI quoted Karnataka Deputy CM as saying. His remarks came after Uddhav Thackeray accused the Karnataka government of deliberately changed name of the disputed region of Belgaum in the state. He said the Maharashtra government will approach the Supreme Court to the region as Union Territory till the matter is in court.
