Tam says New COVID-19 variant not yet identified in Canada

Health Canada now has data needed to complete Moderna review, Hajdu says.
Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says the new variant of COVID-19, which has prompted many countries to implement travel restrictions against the United Kingdom, has not yet been identified in Canada.
Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has said it is analyzing known cases to determine if the new strain, which research suggests is significantly more transmissible than the variant currently dominant in Canada, has already been found in the country.

OTTAWA Canada’s top public health officer has been a model of stoicism through the first year of COVID-19, but Dr. Theresa Tam still got a little choked up last week when the first Canadians were inoculated with a COVID-19 vaccine.
“That was pretty emotional,” said Tam, in an interview reflecting back on the year many would like to forget.

Canada is still waiting for Pfizer to deliver a COVID-19 vaccine delivery schedule for January, federal officials have said.
At a technical briefing on Wednesday, Major-General Dany Fortin, the vice-president of logistics and operations at the Public Health Agency of Canada, said that the country is still in talks with Pfizer to finalize the 2021 delivery schedule of its COVID-19 vaccine.
“They are still working through the schedule for January. There’s a global demand. It’s a global manufacturer. Of course, they have challenges because we’re also getting into the holiday period,” Fortin said. “We continue to work with them and refine this [schedule].”
