Fake lawyer who brought drugs to inmates jailed for 15 months

Magistrate Court NASSAU| A 25-year-old woman who tricked prison guards into believing she was a lawyer in order to smuggle contraband to inmates will be spending 15 months in a real prison. Warnika Russell, of Zion Boulevard, took advantage of the prison’s policy not to search lawyers visiting inmates since September 13, 2020. After carrying out the ruse successfully 11 times, Russell was arrested on Friday when guards finally questioned her credentials. When police searched Russell, they found 2.6 pounds of marijuana and an Alcatel cellphone taped to her body. Perez Hepburn, 32, was arrested after officers found three small packs of Indian hemp in his socks on December 29. He pleaded guilty to one count of simple possession during a hearing before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes. The court officers went to Hepburn’s residence around 7.20pm on December 29. They then approached the accused and told him he would be searched for dangerous drugs and firearms. During their investigation, officers found the drugs stashed in his socks. In court Hepburn told the magistrate that he had been smoking for nine years, but usually kept his supply at home.

Man jailed for unlicensed firearm

Prince Atherley was arrested after officers found a loaded 9mm pistol in his waistband on December 30. He pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal ammunition during a hearing before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes. The court heard that night, officers on mobile patrol near Cambridge Street observed Atherley sitting in a car. The prosecution said the accused appeared to look in the direction of the officers before acting in a suspicious manner. Officers then approached Atherley and told him he would be searched for dangerous drugs and firearms. During their investigation, they discovered the weapon, which had eight unfired rounds of .9mm ammunition in it. Atherley was subsequently arrested and transported to the Central Detective Unit where he admitted to the offences in an interview with police.

He pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition during a hearing before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes. The prosecution said that night, officers conducting static duties on West Bay Street observed the accused driving a black Honda Fit. They then beckoned for him to stop and told him they suspected he had dangerous drugs and firearms.
