Former State Representative and long-time Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has now resigned as Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois. According to a press release from the DPI this afternoon, Vice Chair Karen Yarbrough will be appointed as interim chair of the party until a new chair is named. Madigan has held the chair of the DPI since 1998. Madigan’s current four-year term as state central committeeman ends following the March primary in 2022. Pursuant to the Illinois Election Code, the 36 members of the Democratic State Central Committee will meet within 30 days to select a new chair to serve for the remainder of the term.
Earlier this year, Madigan announced that he would not seek re-election as the Speaker of the Illinois House after more than three decades in power. That decision followed a vote of Democratic lawmakers that showed Madigan did not have enough support to retain his speakership, and he was ultimately replaced by Rep. Chris Welch in a January vote.
Last week, Madigan announced that he would resign his seat in Illinois’ 22
nd district, a seat he had held for more than 50 years. During a vote Sunday, Madigan endorsed Edward Guerra Kordatt as his successor, and the 26-year-old was sworn into office.
“… and like that … ‘poof’ … he was gone”
Wow! Was not expecting this so soon after resigning his House seat. He will leave a void and the leadership of the party has to step up.
Waiting for Republican state chair snarky response.
Will Madigan remain a power behind the throne? Or is he out to pasture as a relic of a former time.
Bob Raica is interested in being appointed to his state central committee seat.

A gentleman should know when to leave the party.
People need to stop suggesting that Madigan will remain as a hidden “power behind the throne”
