Road Safety Week concludes
There is a need to promote road safety regulations and use of social media platforms is an effective way to reach out to people with a message, said Additional Transport Commissioner S.A.V. Prasada Rao on Wednesday.
Addressing the valedictory of the ‘Road Safety Week’ organised by the Transport Department, Mr. Rao said more than 1.5 lakh people lose their lives across the country in road accidents every year, causing economic hardship and emotional trauma to their families.

The East Division police on Monday unearthed inter-State racket and arrested a gang of seven who allegedly targeted car owners who had defaulted in paying their EMIs.
The gang would offer to purchase the car and take on the loan. When the owner agreed, they paid a token amount as deposit, took the original papers and the cars with the promise that they would pay the full amount soon. Instead, they took the cars to Andhra Pradesh and got new registration numbers for the vehicles without the mandatory NOC. “The scam was perpetuated with the help of RTO officials in Anantapur, who were registering the vehicles without the required NOC from Karnataka for a commission,” said a police officer.
Awareness programmes to be conducted for drivers, students
Collector A. Md. Imtiaz flagged off the month-long 32nd National Road Safety Month awareness drive in the district on Monday.
He said many of the road mishaps were occurring due to human errors and asked the vehicle riders to take steps to avoid road mishaps.
“Every citizen should be aware of road safety and traffic rules and should follow them strictly to prevent road accidents,” Mr. Imtiaz said.
Superintendent of Police M. Ravindranath Babu, Deputy Transport Commissioner M. Purendra, Additional SP Mallika Garg, were among those present.
Police Commissioner B. Srinivasulu launched the safety awareness drive at Benz Circle. Sensitisation programmes would be conducted for auto, lorry, RTC and school bus drivers and for students, he said. Lockdown keeps road accidents under check
As the year of the pandemic comes to an end, there is some cheer as 2020 has seen lesser accidents in Guntur district. In Guntur Urban limits, 545 road accidents took place till the end of November, when compared with 866 accidents in 2017, 857 accidents in 2018 and 803 accidents in 2019.
In Guntur Rural limits, 470 road accidents took place, when compared with 517 in 2019 and 548 in 2018. But the fatality rate remained higher, as in 2020, there were 586 deaths when compared with 768 in 2019 and 738 in 2018.

Joint Collector R. Govinda Rao said that officials from the National Highway Authority of India, Transport Department, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and the police should inspect accident-prone spots in the district and take preventive measures. He was speaking during the road safety committee meet here on Wednesday.
Mr. Govinda Rao instructed the officials to arrange sign boards immediately at the black spots. He also added that potholes on the roads should be repaired at the earliest. He also asked the officials to arrange barricades, speedbreakers at necessary points. Earlier Deputy Transport Commissioner, G. Raja Ratnam spoke about measures being taken by the department to prevent road accidents.
