WASHINGTON (AP) â Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday, declaring that âdemocracy has prevailedâ and summoning American resilience and unity to confront the deeply divided nationâs historic confluence of crises.
Denouncing a national âuncivil war,â Biden took the oath at a U.S. Capitol that had been battered by an insurrectionist siege just two weeks earlier. Then, taking his place in the White House Oval Office, he plunged into a stack of executive actions that began to undo the heart of his polarizing predecessor âs agenda on matters from the deadly pandemic to climate change.

Today is Inauguration Day. President Trump has officially left the the White House for the last time as president. President-elect Joe Biden is being sworn in as 46th president of the United States in a scene unlike any in U.S. history, with tens of thousands of National Guardsmen and women in the streets and no crowd of revelers. The heavily militarized event is taking place just two weeks to the day after a right-wing mob of Trump supporters invaded the Capitol in a failed attempt to overthrow the election.

The Dow closed 116.26 points, or 0.4%, higher to end at 30,930.52, the S&P 500 index gained 30.66 points, or 0.8%, closing at 3,798.91, while the Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 198.68 points, or 1.5%, to finish at 13,197.18.
