Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday in an inauguration ceremony that, amid violent threats and a deadly pandemic, will look unlike any other.
What’s the schedule of events?
The ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m. with the playing of the national anthem and an invocation, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in shortly before noon by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. President-elect Biden will be sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts at noon.

The last times there were strong glimmers of hope of having a woman in the White House were in 1984 (when Geraldine Ferraro ran for vice president), 2008 and, most recently, in 2016 when Hillary Clinton made history as the first woman nominated for president on a major party ticket.
Many people were delighted, especially Italian American women like myself, when Ferraro ran. They held all kinds of parties for her. I had the pleasure of meeting her on more than one occasion. I once asked her, “What do you do with criticism?” As a Democrat and a woman, she was getting more than her share of verbal attacks, and this was before Twitter and other social media platforms.
Corporate Donor Class Pushes Alejandro Mayorkas DHS Confirmation

The donor class is urging a quick confirmation of President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Alejandro Mayorkas.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will meet on Tuesday for Mayorkas’s confirmation hearing. The former Obama administration official has the backing of corporate special interest groups and billionaire donors who regularly lobby to inflate the United States labor market via immigration to cut U.S. wages.
