UK prime minister: I unreservedly condemn Trump s incitement of protesters From CNN s Lindsay Isaac Tolga Akmen/Pool/AFP/Getty Images British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said President Trump was completely wrong to encourage a mob of protesters to storm the Capitol building in DC. In so far as he encouraged people to go to Congress, and in so far as the President has consistently cast doubt on the outcome of a free and fair election, I believe that to be completely wrong,  Boris Johnson said in a press conference. I unreservedly condemn encouraging people to behave in the disgraceful way they did in the Capitol.

Pence affirms Biden s election win, defying Trump

WASHINGTON U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence defied President Donald Trump early Thursday morning as he affirmed President-elect Joe Biden s November victory, putting an end to Trump s futile efforts to subvert American democracy and overturn the results of the election. In a move that infuriated Trump and left his own political future far less certain, Pence on Wednesday acknowledged that he did not have the power to unilaterally throw out electoral college votes as Trump and some of his attorneys had wrongly insisted. Pence, as the session came to an end, said the count shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of Biden s victory, but offered no words of congratulations to the incoming administration. It capped an extraordinary day of chaos, violence and division after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol, sending lawmakers into hiding and delaying the proceeding.

Wednesday s vote by a joint session of Congress was the last hurdle before the Jan. 20 inauguration of Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer from New Jersey s 5th District voted to certify the Electoral College votes.

Congress finalizes Biden victory; Oregon s Bentz splits votes

WASHINGTON — In a day scarred by a historic violent attack on the U.S. Capitol as Congress met, shaken lawmakers insisted on resuming a session that went late into the night to approve the Electoral College vote for President-Elect Joe Biden early Thursday morning, Jan. 7. Lawmakers had come to Congress Wednesday expecting a contentious day of debate as a splinter group of Republicans said they would slow and perhaps even halt the traditional reading of the votes for president cast Dec. 14 by the Electoral College. President Donald Trump had been ceaselessly pushing claims that the election was stolen from him despite losing to Democrat Joe Biden by more than seven million votes and a 306-232 tally in the Electoral College.
