US election 2020: Joe Biden s diverse team raises policy questions

Save Share Taken altogether, US President-elect Joe Biden’s cabinet is a decidedly mixed bag that has left many Democrats confused as to whether the new administration will really challenge an entrenched economic and political system, or revert to the complacency of the Clinton and Obama years that helped deliver the White House to Donald Trump. As Biden’s picks have been trotted out, even while the outgoing President Donald Trump continues to challenge Biden’s historic and resounding victory, the picture has only gotten fuzzier. Some are familiar faces popping up in strange places. Former national security adviser and United Nations ambassador Susan Rice, who built her entire career on foreign policy, is to be chief domestic policy adviser. Denis McDonough, who has never served in the military, will head Veterans Affairs. And a recently retired US Army general, Lloyd Austin, has been nominated to run a Defence Department meant to be led by civilians.

FAIRFIELD-SUISUN, CALIFORNIA George Skelton: Yes, Feinstein is the oldest US senator. But she should be able to retire on her own terms [Los Angeles Times :: BC-SKELTON-COLUMN:LA] California Sen. Dianne Feinstein says she hasn’t thought about retiring soon despite some assertions that the 87-year-old lawmaker should step aside because her cognitive abilities have allegedly declined. “No, I haven’t,” she told me in response to a brief question about whether she’d considered retiring early. Her fifth full term doesn’t expire until the end of 2024 when she’ll be 91. She’s currently the oldest U.S. senator. There are also six other octogenarians in the Senate all men.

Meet the World s Largest Free Trade Area

Leaders from around the world, including many in Africa, have been sending congratulatory messages to U.S. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. After four years of a U.S. administration that waged war on multilateral institutions, African hopes are high for a reset. And it couldn’t come at a better time. As a collective, the continent is embarking on a new economic path. In 2018, African heads of state signed an agreement that would bring to life the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) a game-changer in African regional and international trade. When it comes into effect in stages over the next several months and years, the AfCFTA will cover a market of more than 1.2 billion people and up to $3 trillion in combined GDP, with the potential of increasing intra-African trade by over 50 percent, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Vice President Mike Pence, Karen Pence got COVID-19 vaccine

USA TODAY WASHINGTON – Vice President Mike Pence, the head of the White House s coronavirus task force, was vaccinated for COVID-19 Friday morning at a live, televised event intended to build public confidence in the vaccine. I didn t feel a thing, Pence said. Well done. Pence, who wore a short-sleeved shirt and a face mask, sat in a chair next to an American flag and under a sign that said “SAFE and EFFECTIVE.” He received the recently approved vaccine developed by Pfizer that is being distributed throughout the country. Karen and I hope this step today will be a source of confidence and of comfort to the American people, Pence said.  These days of hardship and heartbreak will, in a day not too far in the future, be put in the past.
