Fifty-seven years ago, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a commencement address in which he said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
King may not have been the first to speak these words, which had been used since the 19th century, most always in the context of racial equality and the abolishment of slavery. But on King’s lips, with his commitment to peaceful change, followed by his ultimate sacrifice, the words would come to inspire the next generations.
