Karl Rove: A Giuliani defense for Trump would raise the likelihood of Republicans convicting him

Karl Rove: A Giuliani defense for Trump would raise the likelihood of Republicans convicting him Print this article Veteran Republican Karl Rove warned that if President Trump chooses his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, to defend him in the Senate impeachment trial, it would backfire on him. Rove, who served as deputy chief of staff under President George W. Bush, said he believes Giuliani s claims on voter fraud in the aftermath of the 2020 election hurt his credibility, and his role in an impeachment defense would drive more GOP senators to convict Trump. With the Rudy Giuliani defense, there is a strong likelihood that more than 17 Republicans will because essentially that argument is, this was justified, Rove said on

Statehouses, Washington, D.C. Brace For Potentially Violent Week Some 25,000 National Guard troops from around the country were due in the District of Columbia in the coming days. David A. Lieb and Adam Geller Police and National Guard troops stood sentry at newly fortified statehouses Sunday ahead of demonstrations planned for the leadup to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, as authorities worked to deter a repeat of the recent riot that overran the U.S. Capitol. A few protesters were starting to gather in some cities, but streets in many others remained empty. About two dozen people, several carrying long guns, protested outside the Ohio Statehouse, observed by several of the dozens of state troopers positioned around the building. Valley News - Column: Important context that lengthy column omitted

Column: Important context that lengthy column omitted Modified: 1/16/2021 10:20:03 PM Mohsen Mahdawi’s story, as told over two days and six pages by Valley News columnist Jim Kenyon, is the story of a Palestinian immigrant seeking the American Dream (“A place to call home,” Dec. 26, and “New land, new purpose,” Dec. 27). Today’s dissatisfied individuals would have you believe that dream no longer exists, but Mahdawi’s experience appears to reinforce the words inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Mahdawi has been met by love and welcoming here in the Upper Valley, and it seems he doesn’t subscribe to “cancel culture,” or to the notion that the U.S. is a systemically racist society. One has to wonder why so many do. If it were true, why would we have had a President Barack Obama, or have a Vice President-elect Kamala Harris? Or other wonderful success stories, such as

Harris to resign from Senate seat on Monday

Though Harris is leaving her Senate seat, she s not technically leaving the Senate behind entirely. Harris will be sworn in on Wednesday by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor As vice president she also holds the role of being president of the Senate. The title allows Harris to preside over the chamber and break 50-50 ties, effectively handing Democrats the majority for the first time since 2014 once she is sworn in on Wednesday.  Democrats failed to lock down the majority in November but squeaked out a 50-50 majority after winning the two Georgia runoff elections.  This is not a goodbye for Vice President-elect Harris, said a Harris aide. As she resigns from the Senate, she s preparing to take an oath that will allow her to preside over it.
