Romanian authorities: No recovery relief funds for irrigation

The European Commission has told Romanian authorities that irrigation works could not be funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility and that the government allocated too large a share of the fund to transport infrastructure. The government set aside investments of €3 billion for irrigation infrastructure and other land improvement works in its proposal for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The investments will still be carried out from the state budget or rural development funds, Deputy Prime Minister Dan Barna has promised. However, the Commission has stated that agricultural works cannot be funded from the proposed Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. According to the government, the Commission has a different opinion on the environmental impact than Romanian authorities.
