Designed to stimulate domestic travel within Australia, 800,000 half-priced fares were made available through airlines and travel agents on April 1. The flights, taking off between April 1 and the end of September, were part of the federal government‘s $1.2bn tourism support package. Since going on sale, about 663,000 of the discounted fares were already purchased with the final few expected to sell within days.

With limited impact from the pandemic, the region’s agriculture and resource industries continued to power ahead, Mr McCormack said, contributing billions to the economy. The Nationals leader was in Gladstone on Tuesday, to announce $10 million in funding for a hydrogen knowledge centre and the beautification of Auckland Hill. Mr McCormack said the port city had been an “economic powerhouse” helping drive export income and provide valuable economic contributions. “This nation owes Gladstone a debt of gratitude for what it has done through COVID,” he said.

$10M plan to help industry, tourism and economic growth

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack was in Gladstone on Tuesday to announce the funding for a hydrogen knowledge centre and to beautify Auckland Hill. Gladstone region Mayor Matt Burnett said the investment would provide the community with many opportunities and thanked the Australian Government for its commitment to strengthening the area’s economic and tourism growth. “Council recently facilitated the transfer of Auckland Hill to the Gladstone Ports Corporation to enable further development of the East Shores precinct,” Mr Burnett said.
