Grant helps secure sugarcane farms and jobs
CANEGROWERS has welcomed the announcement of a Federal Government grant for a crucial piece of infrastructure to help Maryborough and Sunshine Coast growers get their sugarcane to Childers for crushing this year.
The Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and local Federal MP Keith Pitt have announced a $2.5 million Community Development Grant towards the construction of a transloader to move sugarcane from road to rail transport so it can be processed at the Isis Central Sugar Mill.
CANEGROWERS had called for government assistance after MSF Sugar announced the closure of the Maryborough Mill at the end of the 2020 season.
Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack says regional Australians will not be “disadvantaged by their postcode” when it comes to the vaccine rollout across the country.
“The people eligible for the first round of vaccines who live in regional Australia will not be disadvantaged by their postcode and nor should they be," he said. "Everyone who gets the vaccine will be able to get it close to where they live.
“The government is also working with both DHL and Linfox to ensure cold chain storage and supply to all Australians, including rural and remote locations.
“They have completed … 341 delivery consignments of vaccines so far and the vaccines have travelled 397,782km around Australia to get to their destinations.
“That is further than from the moon to the earth”.

Congratulations, Jenna Price, for your article about alcohol being weaponised in sexual assaults (“Rapists are weaponising alcohol”, February 23). During my teaching career, I have been a chaperone teacher at many Year 12 formals. A number of times I have volunteered to drive young women home who were too intoxicated to stand, let alone protect themselves.
Comparing apples with oranges is usually unhelpful. However, would you expect to emerge unhurt from racing across a busy freeway or jumping into a lion’s den? In an ideal world, young people don’t engage in underage drinking, adults drink moderately, they don’t mix intoxicating substances and all men are respectful of others. As our ideal world is unattainable, people of all ages must heed the advice not to put themselves in
The trophy ceremony for the Australian Open men’s final has been marred by booing after Tennis Australia president mentioned the coronavirus vaccine rollout in a speech.
Jayne Hrdlicka thanked the Victorian government for ensuring the competition continued despite a COVID-19 outbreak and snap lockdown and touted the Pfizer rollout.
Her comment triggered booing from the crowd, behaviour which was condemned by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack who described it as “disgusting” and “un-Australian”.
“I don’t like booing at any event and certainly any sporting event”.
