Dubai: Dh10 million compensation ordered in botched nose-job case

Dubai: The Dubai Civil Court ordered three medics and a surgery centre in Dubai that conducted a nose-job that left an Emirati woman in coma to pay Dh10 million compensation. The doctors, who worked at a day surgery centre, were convicted for medical malpractice that led to the permanent disability of 25-year-old Rawdha Abdullah Al Maeeni. Earlier last year, Dubai Cassation Court upheld the one-year prison sentence for the 59-year-old ENT (ear, nose and throat) surgeon from the Dominican Republic, 65-year-old anaesthetist from Syria and 69-year-old technician, also from Syria. They will be deported after they serve their prison terms. The medical centre has been fined Dh300,000.

The Dubai Police have arrested the 39-year-old maid after her employer found out the theft. According to court records, the maid’s employer while passing by her room on February 15, found that the former was using one of her face masks. The employer, who is of Arab nationality, suspected the maid was stealing household belongings. She searched the maid’s room and found that many things belonged to the family was in her possession. The stolen things included two iPhones, a tablet and other stuff, worth around Dh5,000.

According to court documents, the alleged incident occurred on January 31 while the defendant was leaving the construction site after finishing the day’s work. A security official at the construction site got suspicious as the worker was seen to be leaving with a bag in his hand. The official, who is also an eyewitness in the ongoing trial, tried to question the worker, but he appeared perturbed by the move.
