A typical shotgun.
Opposition Spokesman on Water and Agriculture, Lothan Cousins, is proposing that all registered farmers be afforded licensing for shotguns so they can protect their lives and properties from praedial thieves.
Cousins, the Member of Parliament (M) for South West Clarendon, made the call on Tuesday during his contribution to the 2021-2022 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.
Praedial larceny is costing the agricultural sector up to $5 billion in losses each year, according to official estimates, and Cousins warned that if the problem is not addressed quickly, it could prove to be the death knell of the sector that contributes significantly to Jamaica’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs thousands of people directly and indirectly.
