The state of Illinois has a lot of gun control. In fact, Cam wrote about that earlier today. They love gun control up that way and they resent the hell out of any effort to dial back the infringements on people’s right to keep and bear arms.
To proponents of gun control, everything Illinois does is key in fighting violent crime. Without those laws, Illinois would have major problems.
So, what does it say that even with all those gun control laws, the state is knee-deep in violent crime anyway?
A new study conducted by a nonprofit advocating for gun control shows Illinois ranks fifth in the country in homicides among Black people. Ninety percent of those victims died from gun violence.
Gun Rights Activist Tells Congress Education Can Reduce Shootings, Not More Laws
A gun rights activist told the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Thursday that educating the public about gun safety, providing firearms training, and enforcing existing gun laws are the answers to reducing shootings, not more legislation like the two background check bills that recently passed the House.
Dianna Muller founder of the DC Project, a women’s gun rights group, testified in front of the House Sub-committee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security during a hearing on reducing mass shootings. She said she believes the universal background check legislation currently waiting to be considered by the Senate will only punish law-abiding citizens and prevent less affluent citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights, instead of preventing shootings.

Violence Policy Center Executive Director Josh Sugarmann explained why his organization conducts the study each year.
“The goal of our work for this study is to help support community advocates, organizations on the ground working to stop this violence,” said Sugarmann. “At the same time, we’re helping educate policy makers and the public regarding the reality of gun violence in America.”
Kathleen Sances, President of the Gun Violence Prevention PAC, stressed Illinois is leading the nation for all the wrong reasons. In fact, she said the Violence Policy Center’s study only increases the need to pass Senate Bill 568.

Illinois Democrats Advocating For Gun Reform As Session Winds Down
(Springfield, IL) Illinois Democrats are advocating for gun reform as the legislative session begins to wind down. The Gun Violence Prevention PAC is urging the passage of a Senate bill that would require background checks for all gun sales, collect fingerprints from FOID card applicants, and dedicate mental health funding for communities most impacted by gun violence. It is being attached to the Fix the FOID proposal as a comprehensive gun control bill.
