It has been another week filled with heartache as we watched two people of color one only 13 years old die at hands of law enforcement. While I continue to believe in and be encouraged by the adoption of the NAACP and ILACP 10 Shared Principles for reform by police departments throughout the 14th District and Cook County, I am keenly aware that is only one piece of the puzzle, and that there is more work to be done.
This scenario of black and brown individuals being killed during interactions with law enforcement has been increasingly frequent, shining a harsh light on what we must no longer deny is a broken system. In a country where all are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, this use of lethal force is simply unacceptable. No life deserves to be cut short, period. And no one should ever grieve a life cut short by the hands of government-appointed, taxpayer-funded, protectors of our communities.

White supremacist violence is not new, but in recent years, it has become a primary national security threat in the United States.
1 Notions of racial superiority, hostility toward immigrants and minorities, and the myth of an embattled white majority defending its power have increasingly infiltrated mainstream American political and cultural discourse.
2 In October 2020, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published its annual threat assessment, identifying racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists, particularly white supremacist extremists, as “the most persistent and lethal threat in the Homeland.”

ROANOKE, Va. – As the nation works to address a spike in mass shootings, the City of Roanoke is laying the groundwork on how communities can address gun violence in their cities.
Discussing gun violence is not a new concept here in Roanoke, the city has seen its own spike in shootings over the past couple of years.
“We have a gun violence problem in this country and in this Commonwealth,” Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said.

WASHINGTON - A Senate Democrat leading negotiations seeking to compromise with Republicans on gun-control legislation said Sunday that he hopes last weekâs mass shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis will hasten a breakthrough. I hope this will increase the changes to get something done, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said in an interview. We ve been engaged in consistent discussions with Republicans. Interest in this issue does get elevated [for Republicans] when there are more high-profile shootings.
