Activists are hopeful ahead of Gun Violence Awareness Day Share this: With the annual Gun Violence Awareness Day approaching on June 4, activists are hopeful the current Democratic leadership in Washington DC will bring gun regulation reform.  “I think we have right now the strongest chance that we have had in a very long time for meaningful gun legislation,” said Wendy Malloy, Florida state lead for Moms Demand Action, during WMNF’s MidPoint Thursday show on May 27  hosted by Shelley Reback and Janet Scherberger. Moms Demand Action is a non-profit organization that focuses on common sense gun laws. Malloy said the recent executive order issued by President Joe Biden is setting the right tone.

New Heroes Campaign Celebrating Community Violence Intervention Program Leaders – Amnesty International USA

Share Share Just days before Wear Orange Weekend 2021, Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) today announced the launch of the Heroes Campaign, a national advocacy effort to secure critical federal funding for community violence intervention programs. The campaign is AIUSA’s latest effort to bring attention to and to end gun violence that disproportionately affects Black and brown communities throughout the country.  The campaign kicks off with a virtual  live panel discussion at 7:00 PM EST and features six leaders from grassroots violence prevention groups, “heroes” who work tirelessly on the front lines to save lives in their communities. These heroes will discuss how local organizations’ leaders continue to fight the erasure of Black and brown youth from the national conversation, and how proper funding from lawmakers can help curb violence in the most affected communities.

At their May 24 meeting, Pasadena City Council issued a proclamation declaring Friday, June 4, 2021 ‘National Gun Violence Awareness Day’ in Pasadena to honor and remember all of the victims and survivors of gun violence and support efforts to prevent gun violence. The proclamation was received by San Gabriel Valley Moms Demand Action, a local grassroots organization working to reduce gun violence. The proclamation reads that gun violence “touches every segment of our society and impacts people of all ages; it increases the probability of death in incidents of domestic violence; raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others, and among those who attempt suicide; it places children and young people at increased risk of physical harm and injury; and disproportionately affects communities of color.” The procla

Denver to observe National Gun Violence Awareness Day

The Denver City Council unanimously voted Monday to proclaim June 4 as Gun Violence Awareness Day, in accordance with the National Gun Violence Awareness Day established in 2015. In 2020, Colorado experienced 846 gun deaths and 11 mass shootings which killed six and injured 52, according to the proclamation. In 2019, the state had four mass shootings that killed two and injured 20. In Denver, 305 people were injured in shootings in 2020 – up 512% from 2019. Of those victims, nearly a third were children or teenagers and 117 were killed. In 2021, 46 people have already died from gun violence in Denver. “We need to be sure that firearms are handled responsibility and kept out of the hands of people who have no business procuring firearms, and that we keep our children, and all of us, as safe as possible,” said Councilman Paul Kashmann, who led the proclamation.
