HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Serenity Hollis, a 24-year-old Black transgender woman who was shot and killed in Albany, Georgia, on May 8, 2021. Serenity’s death is at least the 25th violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person in 2021. We say “at least” because too often these deaths go unreported or misreported.
According to social media, Serenity was from Orlando, Florida, and moved to Albany, Georgia, in 2019. Serenity’s mother Robyn Osberry said that “the person that’s responsible has no idea what they took from us.I absolutely want to see that justice is served.”

According to
El Nuevo Georgia, Sophie was a part of the EsTr (El / La) Community, or Community Estrella, a community that works to support transgender people in the Atlanta area. The Community has organized a vigil, to be held on May 12, in honor of Sophie. Friends and family are also remembering Sophie on social media, with one sharing that Sophie was “the kindest person on the planet.” Another said,

The Human Rights Campaign is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Remy Fennell, also known on Facebook and in her work hair styling as Remy Kreations, a Black transgender woman in her 20s, who was shot to death on April 15 in Charlotte, N.C. Her death is at least the 15th violent death of a transgender or gender non-conforming person in 2021. We say “at least” because too often these deaths go unreported or misreported. Remy’s death is also the second death of a Black transgender woman in Charlotte in the last two weeks, after Jaida Peterson was killed on April 4.
HRC Mourns Diamond Kyree Sanders, Black Transgender Woman Killed in Cincinnati
HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Diamond Kyree Sanders, a 23-year-old Black transgender woman who was shot to death in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 3. Her death is at least the 11th violent death of a transgender or non-binary person in 2021. We say “at least” because too often these deaths go unreported or misreported.
Diamond was described by a family member on social media as “beloved.” An obituary shared by her family describes many loving memories. “She valued her family and enjoyed spending time with them. As a child, she would say ‘I love my WHOLE family!’,” the obituary states. “As an adult, Diamond was a traveler, known to be in New York City one week and New Orleans the following week. Diamond was really into fashion… Diamond’s unique style, charm and personality will be greatly missed.”
