Gun laws and gangs in New Zealand: What you need to know Russell Palmer © RNZ / Vinay Ranchhod Explainer - More changes are in the pipeline for New Zealand s gun laws, but there have been so many since 15 March 2019 it can be hard to keep track. RNZ is here to clear it all up. New Zealand gun control before 15 March 2019 The history of New Zealand s firearms control began with the Arms Ordinance of 1845, and was followed by The Arms Act 1860 which referred to cutlasses, pikes, warlike stores and the legality of keeping 10 pounds weight of gunpowder . Those were followed by laws on importation of firearms in 1908 and 1920, which included a police gun register, until another law change in 1958.

Firearms Prohibition Orders: Government to ban high-risk people from owning guns

A person subject to an FPO will not be able to use, access, or be around guns. Unless a court order says otherwise, they also will not be able to live in locations where there are firearms or visit locations where there are firearms, or associate with someone who has them. When FPOs come into force, it will be a crime to breach them. The penalties will depend on which conditions have been breached. Someone found in possession or control of a gun would face a penalty of up to five years in prison or up to seven years if the firearm was prohibited.

Absolutely not : Collins denies systemic racism in police Newshub 1 day ago © Newshub Watch National leader Judith Collins press conference. Judith Collins denies there is systemic racism in police, despite Māori making up 43 percent of police prosecutions and 52.7 percent of the prison population.  The National leader s comments came after the Government announced plans to ban high-risk convicted New Zealanders from owning guns through Firearms Prohibition Orders (FPOs) and enable the seizure of assets obtained through illicit means.  Collins said on Tuesday that while she welcomed the introduction of FPOs, the Government should have gone further by allowing warrantless searches of violent offenders, otherwise the law change lacks teeth .
