Airlines still avoid SA – but three majors could be flying South Africans before May

Most international airlines are still not operating commercial passenger flights to and from South Africa. This is due to ongoing travel bans implemented since the discovery of the 501Y.V2 variant in December 2020. But at least three major airlines are hoping to restart flights to and from the country – carrying South African passengers – this month. For more articles, go to www.BusinessInsider.co.za. South Africans have very limited international travel options thanks to extended border closures, concerns around new coronavirus variants, and lack of demand. The reopening of South Africa s borders towards the end of 2020 was supposed to revive travel and tourism. Instead the discovery of a new, more infectious coronavirus variant – 501Y.V2 – which was first identified in samples gathered from the Eastern Cape, led to a wave of fresh restrictions for South Africans.

Kenya Joins Nigeria in Reauthorizing the Boeing 737 MAX

MIAMI – The Republic of Kenya joins Nigeria in giving the Boeing 737 MAX the green light to operate in the East African country again. On February 21, 2021, both countries’ Civil Aviation Authorities signaled their satisfaction with Boeing’s modification and recertification program, following the aircraft’s 20-month grounding. While there are no native Boeing 737 MAX operators in Kenya, the release of the ban on the aircraft type in that country allows other carriers, such as Turkish Airways (TK) and Ethiopian Airlines (ET) to operate the aircraft into the country. NLC again opposes FG airports concession plans

Share There seems to be no end to the imbroglio between the labour unions and the Federal government over the plan to concession four of the international airports. According to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the concession plan was not in the interest of Nigeria and therefore vowed to resist the move to concession the airports. The organised labour also berated the Middle East airline, Turkish Airways and Caverton Helicopter for unjustifiably sacking some of their workers in the country. These and more were contained in the communiqué issued after the National Executive Council (NEC) of NLC held earlier in the week at the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja.
