KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent (AP) â Leaders of volcano-wracked St. Vincent said Tuesday that water is running short as heavy ash contaminates supplies, and they estimated that the eastern Caribbean island will need hundreds of millions of dollars to recover from the eruption of La Soufriere.
Between 16,000 to 20,000 people have been evacuated from the island’s northern region, where the exploding volcano is located, with more than 3,000 of them staying at more than 80 government shelters.

Scientists monitoring the La Soufriere volcano on St Vincent witnessed large plumes of smoke and ash billowing upwards on April 13.
KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent - Videos coming out of the Caribbean are showing the devastating effects of the recent and continued eruptions of the La Soufriere volcano on the island of St. Vincent.
Plumes of smoke continue to billow into the air as precious resources are being tainted by the falling ash.
Satellite footage recorded the exact moment of just one of the many eruptions that have taken place on April 13 since the beginning of the volcanic activity on April 9.

LA SOUFRIERE’s April 2021 eruption has displaced thousands of people living in communities at the base of the volcano and in neighbouring communities. Here’s how the events of St Vincent’s latest explosive volcanic eruption have unfolded over these past four days.
APRIL 9 – EXPLOSIVE ERUPTIONS BEGIN
The volcano erupted on April 9, 2021 at 8:41am, four days shy of its 42nd anniversary. The 2021 eruption occurred on the second Friday in April, just like the last eruption which took place in 1979.
The height of the eruption column was estimated at 10km, and areas in all zones, red, orange, yellow and green experienced heavy ashfall.
Kingstown – General manager of the Central Water & Sewage Authority (CWSA), Garth Saunders said that they have been able to restore a significant supply of water to residents along the southern coast of St Vincent. Water on the island became a scarce commodity following the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano last Friday, with ashfall contaminating major water supply reservoirs, lakes, rivers and streams. “We were able to restore …
