THE EVACUATION of communities in the red hazard zone of La Soufriere began yesterday afternoon as the evacuation order was given by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves at an aferenoon press conference- his second for the day.

St Vincent as the Grenadines was placed on red alert, after information from the scientists monitoring the volcano led them to advise that an explosive eruption was imminent and could happen within the next 24 to 48 hours.

La Soufriere volcano on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent “explosively” erupted early on Friday, spreading ash across surrounding villages, the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre said.
The volcano, dormant for decades, started showing signs of new activity in December which picked up this week. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, ordered an evacuation of the surrounding area late on Thursday.

Health services in red, orange zone have been relocated to green zone – CMO
DR SIMONE KEIZER-BEACHE, the Chief Medical Officer( CMO) Social Share SMART HOSPITALS and other medical facilities in the red and orange zones will be closed during an explosive eruption in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) and their services will be relocated to areas in the green zone.
An emergency press conference was called just after midday yesterday, Thursday 8, where Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves placed the country on high alert due to increased activity at La Soufriere, which has been erupting effusively since December 2020.
Just three hours later, the prime minister called yet another emergency press briefing to issue an evacuation notice to persons living in the red zone on the north east and north west sides of the island.
