The UWI Seismic Research Centre’s scientific team has donated equipment to assist in the monitoring of the La Soufriere volcano
The UWI Seismic Research Centre’s (UWI-SRC) scientific team has increased its capacity to bolster seismic monitoring of La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) through a donation of seismic stations and tele-metry equipment.
The USGS-USAID Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP) recently donated equipment to build four seismic stations and radios to enhance communication.
Three of the stations are solar powered installations with post-hole seismometers. The fourth sensor is a spider seismometer, a device that is designed for rapid deployment in high risk locations where human exposure to hazards should be minimized e.g. volcanic craters.

The Roads, Buildings and General Services Authority (BRAGSA) has completed renovation work on the Belmont Observatory Station.

The project saw the repair of two structures; the living quarters for the scientists and the monitoring station.
Work included tiling, plumbing and carpentry.
BRAGSA also painted the buildings.
The project was done over a two-week period.
The Observatory Station, which is located in the village of Rose Hall in North Leeward was set up to monitor the activities of La Soufriere.
Doctor Thomas Christopher leads a six-member team, which comprises four regional personnel and two Vincentians.
