The La Soufriere volcano erupted for the first time in 40 years on Apr 9. Eruptions have continued to occur daily, with ash clouds covering the country and reaching surrounding islands.

Online school option for SVG students - Barbados Today

Online school option for SVG students Article by April 20, 2021 KINGSTOWN – Thousands of children in St Vincent and the Grenadines could be out of school beyond September due to direct and indirect consequences of the pandemic. The country’s Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has however declared that the country has received enough electronic devices to facilitate virtual learning across the board. Furthermore, the UNICEF office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean has pledged to assist education officials with the rollout of virtual learning for hundreds of children in shelters. The eruptions at the La Soufriere Volcano have resulted in a major dislocation for the educational system. Those schools closest to the volcano’s orange and red zones are blanketed in ash and therefore are not accessible while many learning institutions in the ‘safe’ zones are being used to house evacuees.

Reminiscences of 1979 eruptions - Searchlight

Reminiscences of 1979 eruptions Social Share A few weeks ago I had begun a series centred on one of the great battles of our people to preserve democracy in SVG, the struggle against what became known as the “Dread Bills” of 1981. So far we have done six instalments in the series with a few more to come.  However, given the violent eruption of the Soufriere volcano and the fact that the vast majority of our population either have no knowledge of the events of 1979, as well as the obvious ignorance of previous eruptions, I crave the indulgence of my readers for this week and the next to bring some recollections of 1979 and to highlight excerpts from the eruptions of 1812 and 1902 instead of the Bills series. That series will recommence for the May Day issue, on April 30.
