Local authorities’ efforts to support the NHS Test and Trace programme have been held back by a lack of funding and resources, according to the Commons public accounts committee. In a damning report, the PAC says it is “concerned that local authorities are hampered by limited funding and resources, and continuing uncertainties around funding levels, in carrying out their share of testing and contact tracing activities effectively”. It states that there is “still no clear evidence” to judge the overall effectiveness of the test and trace programme, which has been allocated £37bn over two years. It adds that it is not clear whether its contribution to reducing infection levels, compared to other measures, can justify its “unimaginable” cost.
