Proposed Wyatt s Law passes state Senate, now goes to House

The Michigan Senate on Thursday passed “Wyatt’s Law, which would create a registry of child-abuse offenders. The proposed law is inspired by Wyatt Rewoldt, 8, of St. Clair Shores, who suffered permanent brain and other injuries at the hands of his father’s girlfriend in 2013 at age 1. Wyatt’s mother, Erica Hammel, has been pushing for the law’s passage since shortly after her son was nearly killed because Wyatt’s abuser had a prior child-abuse conviction Hammel didn’t know about. Hammel has been in Lansing this week to lobby for the law. It passed in a 37-1 vote.

Hinch died from COVID, Sununu calls it tragic, cautionary tale

Calling House Speaker Dick Hinch’s death from COVID-19 a “tragic and cautionary tale,” Gov. Chris Sununu said Thursday that everyone shares the responsibility for stopping the spread of the virus. “I would say this: It is unfortunately a tragic and cautionary tale … that everybody has such a responsible role to play in protecting the safety of others and not just themselves,” Sununu said. The 71-year-old Merrimack Republican died Wednesday at his home. Sununu said he has faith that legislative leaders will create operating rules for the upcoming 2021 session that keep lawmakers, staff and the general public safe. But the Newfields Republican had choice words for elected officials who have flouted the statewide mask requirement and other restrictions intended to prevent wider community transmission of COVID-19.
