Three technologies developed by researchers at the Department of Energy s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have won National Technology Transfer Awards from the Federal Laboratory Consortium. The annual FLC Awards recognize significant accomplishments in transferring federal laboratory technologies to the marketplace.
ORNL is among 12 DOE national labs to be honored out of 33 winners from FLC s network of more than 300 federal laboratories, facilities, and research centers. Since the consortium s founding in 1986, ORNL has won a total of 68 awards.
, observed that low-energy neutrinos interact with an argon nucleus through the weak nuclear force in a process called coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering, or CEvNS, which is pronounced “sevens.” Like a ping-pong ball bombarding a softball, a neutrino that hits a nucleus transfers only a small amount of energy to the much larger nucleus, which recoils almost imperceptibly in response to the tiny assault.
Laying the groundwork for the discovery made with the argon nucleus was a 2017 studypublished in
Science in which COHERENT collaborators used the world’s smallest neutrino detector to provide the first evidence of the CEvNS process as neutrinos interacted with larger and heavier cesium and iodine nuclei. Their recoils were even tinier, like bowling balls reacting to ping-pong balls.
AAA Blunder on Ethanol Sets Off Firestorm of Criticism
Fox Business News Worsens the AAA Blunder with a Barrage of
Stupidity
Editors Note: This article was originally published on January 8, 2013. Today, June 24, 2013, in an AP story titled Boost For Cars Or Bust? - Ethanol Debate Heats Up which concerns Big Oil s continuing anti-E15 propaganda, the AAA which has a mandate from its members to protect America s motorists was again quoted as
supporting additional testing of E15 (cheaper, domestic and cleaner) to halt its sale, even though it has been thoroughly tested and found not harmful.
The AP story also quoted Scott Zaremba the owner of a chain of gas stations in Kansas that
Small business partners honored in ORNL awards event
Special to The Oak Ridger
The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory recognized its small business partners today at its virtual 2020 Small Business Awards. The annual event, delayed from its usual spring date because of the COVID-19 pandemic, honors the performance of small businesses that have made a positive impact on ORNL’s operations.
“Small businesses are important contributors to ORNL’s success, as well as being the cornerstone to ensuring the nation’s economic security,” said ORNL Director Thomas Zacharia in a news release. “Our small business partners have performed outstanding work, despite the challenges posed by a global pandemic.”
