Outstanding Grad: Aidan Lewis, College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences 10 May, 2021
Aidan Lewis
Aidan Lewis always dreamed of becoming an astronaut yet was undeclared when he came to Colorado State University.
“I have a lot of interests, which is a blessing and a curse,” Lewis said. While he loves science, he was also drawn toward English, foreign languages and philosophy, but eventually chose to pursue neuroscience.
“Neuroscience is a very cool mix; it has a solid science foundation but can also connect with philosophy, spirituality and a variety of other disciplines, so it seemed like a really good path for me – and as Phillip Quirk (director of CSU’s neuroscience major) says, ‘neuroscience is everything.’”
Researchers reveal how to effectively achieve and maintain a healthy weight loss
Almost one in five Danes live with obesity, which may have serious health consequences. In the world s most recognized medical journal, Danish researchers now document how to effectively achieve and maintain a healthy weight loss.
Half of the Danish population have overweight, while 17 percent live with obesity. Worldwide, almost 40 procent have overweight and 13 procent live with obesity.
The condition is associated with increased risk for early death, as well as sequelae such as Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and infertility.
Weight regain after an initial successful weight loss in people with obesity, constitutes an important and unsolved problem. Until now, no well-documented study on which treatment method is best for maintaining a healthy weight loss has been available.

The combination worked better than either alone for long-term effects
Liraglutide combined with an exercise program bested either the drug or exercise alone for losing weight over the course of a year for adults with obesity who did not have diabetes, according to a randomized, head-to-head, placebo-controlled trial published in
“All active-treatment groups decreased body weight and body-fat percentage after one year, as compared with the increases observed in the placebo group,” wrote Julie R. Lundgren, MD, PhD, from the department of Biomedical Sciences and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Metabolic Research, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues. “The combined strategy reduced the body weight and body-fat percentage approximately twice as much as the single-treatment strategies did and was associated with additional health benefits, such as improvements in the glycated hemoglobin level, insulin sensitivity, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical functioni

Early in human development, during the first trimester of gestation, a fetus may have XX or XY chromosomes that indicate its sex. Yet at this stage a mass of cells known as the bipotential gonad that ultimately develops into either ovaries or testes has yet to commit to its final destiny.
While researchers had studied the steps that go into the later stages of this process, little has been known about the precursors of the bipotential gonad. In a new study published in
