The Art of Leaving: A Conversation with Ayelet Tsabari

Award-winning Israeli writer Ayelet Tsabari will join us to discuss her acclaimed memoir, The Art of Leaving, published by Random House. About this Event Ayelet Tsabari will discuss her memoir, The Art of Leaving and its themes of longing and belonging, growing up Mizrahi in Israel, and reclaiming her Yemeni identity. She will be joined by discussant Rabbi Miriyam Glazer, Emerita Professor of Literature at American Jewish University. McGill University Professor Yael Halevi-Wise talks about her recent book about one of Israel’s foremost contemporary authors, A.B. Yehoshua. About this Event Yael Halevi-Wise, author of the new book The Retrospective Imagination of A.B. Yehoshua (2020), will explore the work and ethos of one of Israel’s foremost contemporary authors. The New York Times has called Yehoshua the “Israeli Faulkner.” Yael Halevi-Wise, McGill University associate professor of Literature and chair of Jewish Studies, will examine how Yehoshua has become a prominent public intellectual in the eye of the Zionist storm and yet his fame – the fact that anyone is even interested in hearing his opinions about Jewish identity – rests on his impressive literary abilities. By Susan Gonzalez April 14, 2021 Share this with FacebookShare this with TwitterShare this with LinkedInShare this with EmailPrint this Top row: Isabela Mares, Tisa Wenger; Bottom row: Robyn Creswell, Marisa Anne Bass Four Yale faculty members are among a group of 184 artists, writers, scholars and scientists awarded 2021 fellowships by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.  Marisa Anne Bass, Robyn Creswell, Isabela Mares, and Tisa Wenger were chosen through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants on the basis of their prior achievements and exceptional promise. Bass is an associate professor in the Department of the History of Art; Creswell is an associate professor in the Department of Comparative Literature; Mares is a professor in the Department of Political Science; and Wenger is associate professor at Yale Divinity School with courtesy appointments in the American Studies program and the Department of Religious Studies.

ASUCR to allocate $40,000 annually for student basic needs

Highlander ASUCR – Courtesy of ASUCR ASUCR held their second meeting of the quarter on Wednesday, April 7. The senate approved two resolutions that will support UCR’s commitment to 100% clean energy and implement American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture classes into UCR’s curriculum. They also approved a senate bill that will permanently allocate $40,000 for student basic needs every year.  During public comment, many students and members of CALPIRG expressed their support for SR-S21-004 Support for 100% Renewable Energy at UCR. The students cited the California wildfires and Riverside’s poor air quality as signs of the damaging effects climate change can have on the planet and urged the senate to vote yes on the resolution.
