Toxic Algae In Lake Okeechobee Gets The Attention Of Florida Congressman | BIG 105 9

By Joel Malkin Apr 28, 2021 The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County issued a Health Alert over the harmful toxic algae bloom that s plaguing Lake Okeechobee. Health officials took a water sample on Monday from the area surrounding the Pahokee Marina and found it contains highly toxic bacteria. A Florida congressman took a tour of the area on Wednesday. The smell. The taste. I probably spit ten times as I walked over there. U.S. Representative Brian Mast calls the algae bloom at the Pahokee Marina poison and is pushing to make discharges of such toxins against federal law. He says words like poison and toxic are not hyperbole. The algae actually meets levels determined by the Department of Environmental Protection.

GOP Is playing hardball over RGGI | News, Sports, Jobs

jwhittaker@post-journal.com Senate Republicans are playing hardball with Gov. Tom Wolf over the governor’s support of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. The Senate Republican Caucus sent a letter to Wolf last week saying Republicans will block all nominations to the state Public Utility Commission until Wolf pulls his unilateral decision to have Pennsylvania join RGGI and work with the Legislature, according to Senator Joe Pittman, who has spearheaded efforts of Legislative involvement in RGGI. All 27 members of the Senate Republican Caucus signed the letter. “We have made it clear over the past 19 months that this is about the balance of powers in Pennsylvania,” Pittman said. “One of the key components of RGGI is a tax on carbon emissions. That in and of itself would destroy thousands of family-sustaining jobs across the Commonwealth.

Greenhouse gas initiative debate continues

It has been just over a year since Andrew G. Place made his final remarks as a member of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, completing a five-year term. His seat on the five-member panel has been vacant ever since — and may remain that way as long as Gov. Tom Wolf continues his bid to bring the Keystone State into the Northeast Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, effective at the end of this year. RGGI is a compact in which participating states would impose a carbon fee on electricity production and require fossil fuel generation to purchase allowances. Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia have agreed to cap and reduce power sector carbon dioxide emissions.
