DEP launches program to fight illegal dumping in Secaucus, Jersey City and 9 other communities
Updated Feb 08, 2021;
Jersey City, Secaucus and nine other communities are receiving help from the state Department of Environmental Protection in the battle against illegal dumping.
Acting DEP Commissioner Shawn LaTourette announced Monday that it will loan “deterrence equipment” to participating towns and provide training and support to help local officials enforce civil and criminal environmental laws.
“Our taxpayers should not be held responsible for the costly cleanups caused by these irresponsible lawbreakers,” Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said in a statement. “Illegal dumping sites often become magnets for even more dumping, and so we’re thankful to partner with the DEP to boost our efforts of deterring and enforcing illegal dumping.”
