Superintendents of the New Shoreham Wastewater Treatment facility have reminded residents many times of the damage that flushing so-called disposable wipes down the toilet can cause clogging and other headaches for the department.
The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) also issued a press release this past week reminding all Rhode Islanders to refrain from flushing disinfectant wipes including those labeled “flushable” and to dispose of them in the trash.
“Whether your home or business is connected to the public sewer system or has an onsite wastewater treatment system, you should never flush any type of wipes, including baby wipes and those labeled flushable, down the toilet. Instead, you should place these products in the trash for proper disposal,” the release said.

PORTSMOUTH – National Grid will be required to file an application for the siting of a major energy facility if it wants to keep its Liquefied Natural Gas vaporization facility on Old Mill Lane, according a decision by the state Energy Facility Siting Board on Friday.
The company argued before the board that the facility is temporary, portable and only in operation four months a year, December through March, and thus not under the jurisdiction of the siting board. Oral arguments were heard Dec. 10.
Ron Gerwatowski, chairman of the Energy Facility Siting Board, opened Friday’s meeting saying that he was not convinced that Old Mill Lane was temporary.

PAWTUCKET – Two developments in Pawtucket have received brownfields grants from the state, which will aid in site preparation at Tidewater Landing, the proposed riverfront project, as well as redevelopment for the Dexter Street Commons near the coming train station.
“On behalf of the city of Pawtucket, I thank Gov. (Gina) Raimondo and RIDEM … for providing some of the necessary funds to remediate sites throughout our city,” Mayor Donald Grebien said. “Tidewater Landing and Dexter Street Commons are catalysts for the transformation of Pawtucket for years to come, and we are grateful for the state’s continued support and collaboration.”
