State health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan ( pic) said the hotspots were picked up on satellite images by the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Monday. “Four hotspots within the Mersing district were located on the images, he said on Wednesday (March 10). Vidyananthan said based on the state s Department of Environment (DoE), 213 cases of open burning were reported between Jan 1 and March 9. He said as of 9am on Wednesday, only one station recorded good quality for the Air Pollutant Index (API) while six stations showed moderate readings.
