Water boards owed R12.6 billion, says Sisulu

Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has revealed that water boards are owed more than R12.6 billion by municipalities across the country.
The government has, for the last few years, raised concern about money owed to water boards.
In her budget vote on Tuesday, Sisulu said they also discovered that 41% of municipal water is non-revenue and they end up losing billions of rand.
Sisulu said billions were washed through the drain because of this revenue that was lost through various ways.
She said they were making progress in a number of areas.

JOHANNESBURG - The Water and Sanitation Department has been asked to present alternative proposals regarding its deployment of Cuban engineers in an effort to avoid a court battle.
Trade union Solidarity has given the department until Monday to respond to its legal letter and revoke the appointment of 24 Cuban engineers.
In the legal letter, Solidarity has ordered Minister Lindiwe Sisulu to suspend the engineering project or she may have to defend its rollout in court.

SA’s long-delayed R37bn Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) which is facing funding pressures, Covid-19 delays and protests in the mountain kingdom will begin water delivery under the next phase in 2027.
The department of water & sanitation said the building of roads, accommodation and electricity installations have begun, and that border closures due to Covid-19 will not affect the completion of the project.
“Covid-19 disruptions aren’t expected to have a material impact on the planned completion date of project works and commencement date of water delivery to SA, in early 2027.”
