Tighter silica rules needed to protect miners from black lung disease – Appalachian Voices

It is well-documented that breathing in silica dust, also known as quartz, is a prime culprit in the ongoing epidemic of complicated black lung disease, but regulations protecting coal miners from this dangerous substance are weak. With one in five Central Appalachian coal-miners who have worked 25 years or more underground now afflicted with the deadly disease, the consequence of these weak worker protections can be measured in lives. Currently, the Mine Safety and Health Administration allows miners to be exposed to as much as 100 micrograms of silica dust per cubic meter of air. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General both recommend that this level be reduced to 50 micrograms per cubic meter, which is the current legal level of exposure in all other industries. Labor contractor indicted for operating undocumented worker conspiracy and extensive tax fraud

PHILADELPHIA   Acting United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams announced that Miguel Morales of Quarryville, PA; Jose Morales, also of Quarryville, PA; Oscar Carrillo-Perez of West Grove, PA; and Santiago Garcia-Ramirez of Landenberg, PA; were arrested in a take-down operation conducted this morning following their Indictment on charges of conspiring to transport, and transporting, people who are not lawfully present in the United States. Additionally, Morales was charged with making false statements. In a separate Indictment, Miguel Morales and Lawrence Urena of Spring Lake, North Carolina (who was also arrested) were charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States and failure to collect and pay employment taxes.

4 men arrested on charges of transporting undocumented workers after federal raid in Quarryville, Lancaster County

Two Lancaster County men were among four people arrested Wednesday in a raid by federal agents investigating charges of illegal transportation of undocumented workers to mushroom farms in Chester County, the U.S. Department of Justice announced. Miguel Morales, 48, and Jose Morales, 39, both of Quarryville, were taken into custody during a take-down operation Wednesday morning, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams. Also arrested were two Chester County men: Oscar Carillo-Perez, 35, of West Grove, and Santiago Garcia-Ramierz, 44, of Landenberg, Williams said. All four were indicted on charges of conspiring to transport, and transporting, people who are not lawfully present in the United States, according to Williams.
