Furloughed workers top 56,000 as job market hit by COVID-19

Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) The number of workers subject to furlough programs has hit a new high since the COVID-19 pandemic erupted at the beginning of 2020, with a recent surge in cases affecting domestic consumption and the local job market.
The number of workers on formal furlough programs that have been reported to the government rose 11,714 from a week earlier to hit 56,687 as of July 31, according to figures released Monday by the Ministry of Labor (MOL).
The number of employers with such plans in place also rose 709 from a week earlier to hit 4,388, the most since the MOL started to compile figures on these programs in 2009 during the global financial crisis.
