Laos: Officials believe no need for lockdown as measures is enough to contain pandemic; 4 new Covid-19 cases confirmed

Laos-economy-alreayd-affected-by-coronavirus-696x364 VIENTIANE, April 18 (Xinhua): VIENTIANE, April 18: The Laos capital, Vientiane, has avoided going into full lockdown, however, recent Covid-19 prevention measures will still apply, according to a notice issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, reports Laotian Times. The notice states that while the capital will not go into lockdown, the Covid prevention measures outlined in previous notices issued by various ministries over the last few days will remain in effect. “After investigation, contact tracing, and risk assessment following the activities of Case 50, it is the opinion of the National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control that the current situation can be contained, and therefore there will be no order to close the borders to entry and exit of Vientiane Capital, as this would negatively affect society, ” the notice reads.

Laos-China Railway track 80 per cent complete

Laotian Times. Chief Executive Officer and Senior Engineer of the No.2 China Railway Company, Mr. Hu Pin, says the railway tracks have now been laid already from Vientiane Capital link to Luang Prabang and Oudomxay Provinces, according to CRI. “The Laos-China railway tracks is still being lain from Oudomxay Province to Boten Train Station in Luang Namtha Province, and is expected to be finished in the coming months, ” said Mr. Hu Pin. The Laos-China Railway Construction Project commenced in December 2016 and is scheduled to be completed and operational in December 2021. “The project not only focuses on the construction of railways, but it also employs a large number of Lao workers, with 60 percent of the project’s laborers being locally sourced, ” Hu Pin added.

Laos confirms four new Covid-19 cases, tightens up measures against pandemic

Laotian Times. The announcement was made at a press conference held in Vientiane Capital today lead by Dr. Lattanaxay Phetsouvanh, Director-General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, under the Ministry of Health as the country has seen more cases reported on daily basis. Case 55 is a 25-year-old female who arrived in Khammuan province where she received a positive result when tested for Covid-19 at a state quarantine center. Case 56 and 57 are a 32-year-old male and a 24-year-old male who arrived Savannakhet province where they tested positive for Covid-19. Meanwhile, case 58 is 25-year-old female who illegally entered Bolikhamxay Province where she was collected by medical personnel and received a positive result when tested for Covid-19.
