VIENTIANE, July 4 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The surge in Covid-19 infections in neighbouring countries has ramped up the pressure on Laos’ battle to contain the virus. The government is concerned about the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant following the identification of the first three cases last week, which were found among Lao nationals returning from Thailand. Thai authorities reported over 6, 200 new Covid 19 cases and also 41 deaths on Saturday, Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, Dr Phonepaseuth Xayamoungkhoun, told the daily press briefing. Many factories in Thailand have closed, meaning Lao nationals employed there are now returning home, but this increases the risk that the Delta variant will spread in Laos if workers are infected.
