VIENTIANE, July 4 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The surge in Covid-19 infections in neighbouring countries has ramped up the pressure on Laos’ battle to contain the virus.
The government is concerned about the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant following the identification of the first three cases last week, which were found among Lao nationals returning from Thailand.
Thai authorities reported over 6, 200 new Covid 19 cases and also 41 deaths on Saturday, Deputy Director General of the Department of Communicable Disease Control, Dr Phonepaseuth Xayamoungkhoun, told the daily press briefing.
Many factories in Thailand have closed, meaning Lao nationals employed there are now returning home, but this increases the risk that the Delta variant will spread in Laos if workers are infected.

THAILAND: The Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO) abruptly submitted a draft purchase contract for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to the Office of Attorney General (OAG) yesterday (July 2) after the latter publicly stated it never received the contract.

The move came as the government came under further fire over its failure to procure sufficient vaccines as the number of new cases continued to soar, with more than 6,000 cases and 61 fatalities confirmed yesterday.
The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said that the number of new cases is expected to rise further next week.
