Mobile app has improved price data collection of 22 essential commodities: Govt PTI New Delhi | Updated on February 28, 2021 × The government on Sunday said data collection of wholesale and retail prices of 22 essential commodities on a daily basis has improved following the launch of a mobile app in January this year. The Department of Consumer Affairs monitors prices of rice, wheat, wheat flour, gram dal, tur/arhar dal, urad dal, moong dal, masoor dal, sugar, milk, groundnut oil, mustard oil, vanaspati, soya oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, gur, tea, salt, potato, onions and tomato. The price data is being collected from 127 centres across the country through the food and civil supplies departments of state governments.

The Department of Consumer Affairs is now proactively following up with the states to launch e-filing portal at their ends. The government on Friday said the E-Daakhil portal for consumer grievance redressal is now operational in 15 states and Union Territories (UTs). The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which came into force from July 20, 2020, has a provision for e-filing of consumer complaints in the consumer commissions and online payment of the fees for filing a complaint, according to an official statement.

Competition and Consumer Authority seeks to assert its position

25th February 2021 Following the merging of the Competition Authority and the Department of Consumer Affairs at MITI just over a year ago, the resultant entity – the Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) has said that it now looks into educating local consumers about their rights and protections.  This is after the realisation that issues of consumer protection and education still remain a concern in the country.  Director of Communications and Stakeholder Relations at CCA – Gideon Nkala says the authority has come to appreciate that there is a lot that needs to be done to educate consumers about their rights and protections as captured in the Consumer Protection.
