Virtual Reality providing students needed escape from constant restraints
More than a year into the pandemic, most kids are back in school, but a few things are not exactly normal yet.
Things like graduation, eating together in the cafeteria, and field trips continue to pose challenges.
However, a growing number of local districts have found ways to give their students at least the
feel of a field trip, through virtual reality.
Last week, Mrs. McDonnell s third grade class got to try out the ClassVR headsets at Explorer Elementary in D20 for the first time. Who can tell me where Big Ben is located? asks Kristi Guinn to the class as they gazed into their goggles.

ARLINGTON, VA Claremont Immersion Elementary School in Arlington is one of the five elementary schools in Northern Virginia chosen to received the 2020 Healthy School Award from the Marine Corps Marathon Organization.
To quality for the 2020 Health School Award, students from each of the schools had to participate in the one-mile Marine Corps Marathon Fun Run virtual-only event for children, running with their parents or guardians between Sept. 27 and Nov. 10. Claremont led all of the participating schools with the most students to complete the virtual fun run.

LANSING – Three Michigan educators have been selected as state finalists for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), the Michigan Department of Education announced today.
Amanda Barbour, Discovery Elementary, Kentwood Public Schools, K-6 Science
Stephanie Phillips, Emma Murphy Elementary, Lapeer Community Schools, K-6 Mathematics
Bridget Zahradnik, Parkview Elementary, Novi Community Schools, K-6 Science
The PAEMST program is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The selections are usually made in June but, due to the pandemic, the process was pushed back until now.

Four educators have been selected to represent New Mexico as state finalists for the 2021 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The K-6 mathematics finalists are:
Jacqueline Cook from Albuquerque Public Schools
Silva Miranda from Clovis Municipal Schools
The K-6 science finalists are:
Hope Cahill from Santa Fe Public Schools
Amanda Pacheco-Suazo from Albuquerque Public Schools
State finalists represent the most outstanding teachers New Mexico has to offer and serve as both a model and an inspiration to students and fellow teachers.
Each year, a national committee of prominent mathematicians, scientists, mathematics/science education researchers, district level personnel and classroom teachers recommends up to 108 teachers to receive Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
