St Johns County sees decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations

Over the past seven days there have been on average 3,098 COVID-19 related hospitalizations in Florida each day, according to state data. That’s an 8% increase from the average number of daily hospitalizations two and a half weeks ago, when hospitalizations hit a low for the second time since the pandemic began.  On the plus side, the increase is not nearly as high as two previous peaks in coronavirus-related hospitalizations. During the first peak of hospitalizations, on July 20, 2020, an average of 9,217 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 per day. On Jan. 14, when hospitalizations hit the second peak, the seven day average was 7,574 people per day.

Florida, Volusia seeing spike in COVID hospitalizations

Coronavirus-related hospitalizations in Volusia County and statewide are again beginning to climb, according to state data.  In Volusia County, the number of hospitalizations has spiked sharply. The increase comes weeks after hundreds of thousands of bikers descended on Daytona Beach and the surrounding area during the 10-day Bike Week that ended in mid-March. Among those who attended Bike Week: a maskless Gov. Ron DeSantis, who drank a beer with Bikers on the last Friday of the event.  Few people wore masks during the event, and despite efforts to limit congestion inside businesses on Main Street, bikers partied in crowded quarters. Two weeks after that event, the area saw a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases.
